Health Information Notice
Brand rankings reflect the average safety score of ingredients used in products, limited to brands with at least 10 tracked products. Higher scores indicate a tendency toward safer, better-studied ingredients, not an absence of risk. This is not an endorsement of any brand or product, and it is not adjusted for how many product categories a brand sells in, a brand concentrated in a narrower category may not be directly comparable to one with a broad catalog. Individual products within any brand may differ. Not dietary advice.

Brands with the highest average ingredient safety scores. Minimum 10 products in database.
Brands With Lowest Average Scores
Brands whose products tend to use more ingredients with lower safety scores or regulatory concerns. This does not mean every product from these brands is unsafe, it reflects the average across all products analyzed.

How to Interpret Brand Scores
A brand's average ingredient safety score tells you about its general approach to ingredient selection, not about any individual product. Brands that score above 4.0 tend to prioritize natural ingredients, avoid controversial additives, and use fewer artificial preservatives and colorings.
Brands scoring below 3.0 tend to have products with more artificial dyes, synthetic preservatives, or ingredients that have drawn regulatory scrutiny. However, many popular brands in this range are actively reformulating, especially as the FDA food dye phaseout approaches.
What Makes a Brand "Safe"?
The safest brands share several common characteristics:
- Fewer artificial additives - They rely on natural preservatives, colors from plant sources, and simpler ingredient lists
- Transparency - They list ingredients clearly and avoid ambiguous terms like "artificial flavors" when possible
- No banned ingredients - They stay ahead of regulatory changes, avoiding ingredients that are banned in other countries or under review by the FDA
- Shorter ingredient lists - Products with fewer ingredients tend to have higher average safety scores because each ingredient can be better studied and understood
Methodology
Brand scores are calculated by averaging the safety score of every ingredient used across all of a brand's products in our database. Safety scores (1-5) for individual ingredients are based on FDA regulatory status, EU regulatory status, state-level bans, and published peer-reviewed research. Only brands with 10 or more products are included to ensure statistical reliability.
Product data comes from the Open Food Facts database, with ingredient safety data from the FDA SAFFA inventory, EFSA evaluations, and state food safety legislation. Scores are updated as new regulatory actions and scientific evidence emerge.
Frequently Asked Questions
How are brand safety scores calculated?
Brand safety scores are the average of safety scores for all ingredients used across all of that brand's products in our database. Each individual ingredient is scored from 1 (Banned) to 5 (Generally Safe) based on FDA status, EU regulatory status, state-level bans, and published scientific research. A brand with an average of 4.5 uses predominantly safe ingredients across its product line.
Why are only brands with 10 or more products included?
A minimum of 10 products ensures statistical reliability. A brand with only 1-2 products in the database might have a misleadingly high or low score based on just a few ingredients. Requiring 10 or more products gives a meaningful picture of the brand's overall ingredient philosophy.
Does a low brand score mean all products are unsafe?
No. A brand's average score reflects the overall ingredient profile across all products. Individual products within a low-scoring brand may still use safe ingredients. Conversely, a high-scoring brand may have some products with questionable additives. Always check individual product ingredient lists.
Can brand scores change over time?
Yes. Brand scores reflect current product formulations. If a brand reformulates to remove artificial dyes, preservatives, or other low-scoring ingredients, its average score will improve as our database is updated. Regulatory changes (like the FDA food dye phaseout) will also affect scores.
